Dawn Porter began her career in corporate law.  While working for CBS News, she observed the work of journalists and became intrigued by the intensity and importance of reportorial work.  With her many skills and talents, and her passion for social justice, she began producing films; then, in 2013, her directorial debut, GIDEON’S ARMY, which follows three young, inspiring public defenders in southern states, not only received support from the Sundance Institute, but went on to win Sundance’s Candescent Award, and was nominated for an Independent Spirit Award and an Emmy.  Porter was in her mid 40s.

Her newest film—her fourth full-length project in seven years—is JOHN LEWIS: GOOD TROUBLE, a profile of the late Congressman and Civil Rights giant.  The film could not be more timely.  We at Bloom join all those who mourn the loss of Lewis and his tireless commitment to voting rights and justice.  JOHN LEWIS: GOOD TROUBLE is available to stream via Film Forum, an independent cinema in New York City, for which I had the privilege of interviewing the brilliant and generous Dawn Porter via Zoom.  Enjoy the interview.
